Riber Castle

Grade II Castle Conversion*

Architecture, Interior Design, Heritage Restoration, Landscape Design, Planning Application Submission

The Project

Riber Castle, a Grade II* listed Victorian landmark overlooking the Derwent Valley, has been reimagined as a collection of 26 unique apartments, alongside shared communal areas and landscaped gardens. Originally built in 1862 by John Smedley, the castle had fallen into disrepair after serving various uses over the decades. This project focused on restoring its historic character while transforming it into a refined, modern residential development.

The design carefully balances heritage conservation with contemporary living. Original architectural features — including turrets, arches, and stonework — were preserved, while the internal layout was completely restructured to accommodate open-plan apartments filled with light, texture, and functionality. A newly introduced central atrium enhances natural light and airflow, creating a social heart within the building and a strong sense of connection among residents.

Every detail was considered to ensure a seamless blend of past and present — from bespoke interiors and thoughtful space planning to energy-efficient solutions and modern finishes. The result is a distinctive living environment that honours the castle’s storied past while delivering the comforts and elegance expected of modern life.
